The choice to utilize a bicycle as your main mode of transportation, is beneficial for a number of reasons. There are many different reasons to cycle, and some have nothing to do with being a preferred method of getting to point A to point B. Some people choose to cycle because they need the exercise. Some people cycle as a competitive sport. And there are others that simply want a way to bond with their family, so they take up cycling. No matter your reason for needing to choose a bicycle, you need to consider a number of different things in order to choose the one that is right for you. One of the major parts of choosing the right cycling bicycle for you is making sure that the bicycle is the right size. The measurement of your inseam is needed for this. Your inseam is the amount of inches from the bottom of your foot, up the inside of your leg to your groin. You should be able to sit on your bike while keeping both feet flat on the ground. For a road bike you should take away 9" from the inseam measurement you took earlier. This is due to the type of tires you will be using for a road bike. These tires will be thinner and designed for efficiency on concrete roads or pavements. With a mountain bike you will need to take away around one foot from the inseam. Again this is to account for the size of tires. These tires are designed to handle rocky and jagged terrain so are therefore thicker. You can of course use a mountain bike for road cycling but this isn't supposed to be their primary use.
You also want to make sure you leave some room between you and the crossbar of your bike. When you get a bike be sure to move the seat up a couple of inches from the crossbar. You should be able to still rest your feet flat on the floor. Which bike you get will greatly alter the clearance you will require. If you are buying a touring bike, for example, you only need an inch or so of clearance. With a mountain bike however you will need some more, 3 inches should suffice. When you are searching for the appropriate cycling bicycle to suit you, there are a number of factors to consider. Will this be an activity that you enjoy daily, or will you only be taking your bicycle out on special occasions? At what height do you feel the most comfortable? Would you rather be able to put your feet flat on the ground or would you rather have that few inches between your feet and the ground when you are sitting down? All of these factors will come into play as you make your choice.
